Killer Dana Dana Point Harbor is your NEW SUP HQ! Since we opened our new DP harbor location in June, the local surf and SUP community has welcomed Killer Dana to the harbor with all the support and stoke of our original Del Prado location. Being close to both Baby Beach and Doheny State Beach makes a perfect marriage with our SUP and surfboard rental program. Come check out our new Killer Dana Surf Shop in Dana Point Harbor!
Here’s Team Rider Charlie Denham pulling into a nice hollow left at Salt Creek. Thanks to Team Manager Mike Cruikshank, our Killer Dana Surf Team is loaded with young talent, bringing our stoke to local beaches from Laguna to Lowers. Not only does Charlie rip in all conditions, he’s also one heck of a Waterman – he recently spearfished a BIG corbina in the surf and was nice enough to treat our entire Killer Dana staff to some outstanding fresh fish tacos. Thanks Charlie, Keep on Shredding!

The OG is back at Killer Dana!
Killer Dana has been riding the wave of two major milestones: the opening of our new shop in Dana Point harbor and the return of our original founder Gary Wright! After a hiatus where GW took some time to pursue his music career, the growth and community-focused direction that Killer Dana represents drew him back into the “authentic, community based hard-core surf shop” that has always been the foundation of Killer Dana. Our business is based on these guiding principles: honor and preserve the rich surf culture of Dana Point, be active in the community for the benefit of all, and offer the best products and customer service possible. And, says Wright: “it’s a great shop to be a part of once again!” Come in and visit GW for taste of the real surf culture of Dana Point. He’ll be happy to see you!

The Ocean takes about 3,500 people annually, and Med Tac’s goal is to reduce that number. Currently it takes professional first responders approximately 10 or more minutes to reach Dana Points beaches, subsequently some of the time that is not enough. Med Tac, Killer Dana, and Dana Point Surf Club are hosting a FREE training course, enabling bystanders to preserve the lives of injured surfers, body boarders, and swimmers. The main goal of this course is to give the ordinary person the skills to preserve a life until professionals arrive. This course is not targeted at one specific group of people, rather it is for the vast majority of people who attend the beach. This course will not only teach you how to prevent drowning, but will teach you the basics of how to save a drowning victim. Parents, the leading cause of death of small children is drowning, therefore that extra time it takes for first responders to arrive may not be enough time. Anyone 11 or older who is eager to learn the basics of CPR, AED’s, and other life saving techniques are encouraged to join us on July 27 from 8-12 inside the Dana Point Community House (24642 San Juan Ave, Dana Point). This course is taught by real certified instructors who are donating their time and energy to enable the average person to save a life.

Occasionally Firewire surfboards will drop off their truck to allow surfers to demo their boards. Being so desirable and also expensive, Firewire gives the opportunity for surfers to ride their boards for FREE to allow surfers to decide which one is the best for them. Try as many boards as you want to find which board is right for you. Try out these boards including but limited to Sci-Fi, Seaside, Go Fish, and Gamma. As of now we are not sure on the exact date we will be having the demo, but it will be sometime next month. So stay tuned to see the exact date.
This weekend in Dana Point, Doheny State Beach Interpretive Association will be hosting the 17th annual Doheny Surf and Art Festival. Around 100 different vendors from around the area will at Doheny, including Killer Dana. The festival is put on to show Dana Point’s surf history through art work, a surf contest, and the over all surf culture. A live band will be playing on the grass for the estimated 7000 people that are expected to attend over the 2 days. Cosmic Creek, the annual surf competition that pays homage to retro-style surfing, happened this past weekend at Salt Creek. Being one of a kind in Dana Point, Cosmic Creek intertwines the retro-surf style with the new era of surfing. In this competition surfers ride on twins and single fins, hand shaped, from the 70’s and 80’s. With some hard competition this year, it was definitely an exciting day. A live band in the middle of the day kept the vibe going and the excitement at a high. We even had some of our own Killer Dana employees surfing in the competition: Bethany Zelasko, Kai Diamond, and Ethan Grubbs. All in all everyone had a great time and it was definitely one to go see. I look forward to next years comp to see who comes out on top.
Since the 2017 renovation of the whole store, the board room has not changed much. On April 13th from 12:00-4:00, the Killer Dana boardroom will have its re-grand opening party. We will be having a BBQ with music and some fun games. With the help from Hippy, the KD crew has been working hard over the past few weeks to make the boardroom better than ever. Along with the Firewire boards that we already carry, we will now be carrying boards shaped by world class local shapers Timmy Patterson and Mark Ellis. The number of boards we carry will just about double, moreover we will be carrying more long boards up to about 9’6″. The whole layout will be more appealing, just in time for the summer rush. The catch surf line up will be expanding as well, with boards ranging from the beater board to the way up to the 9’0″ log. Come stop by on April 13th to check out the all new boardroom.
On March 30th the Dana Point Surf Club will be holding the first annual Dana Point Surf Shop Challenge. 26 surfers from each of the 5 local surf shops will compete for spots on the Dana Point Surf Team. The 5 shops competing will be Killer Dana, Infinity, Girl in the Curl, Hobie, and Jacks. Surfers will compete in different groups based on gender and age, as well as a long board division. The winners of each category will be given the opportunity to surf for Dana Point in the West Coast Board Rider Series. Killer Dana has quite an impressive team and will hopefully take home the trophy.

Here at Killer Dana, some of our most popular boards are made by Firewire surfboards. Founded in 1981 in Western Australia, Firewire (then called Nev Surfboards) has a deep history of producing boards for the world’s best surfers. Beginning in the early 90’s with the invention of the computer shaping machine, Firewire began producing quality boards at an extremely fast rate. By 2004 they had transitioned into making almost all boards through machine shaping, finished with a high-density composite top and bottom.
Today they manufacture 3 different types of boards: LFT (Linear Flex Technology), Helium, and Timbertek. LFT is the closest to a traditional surfboard with an 18mm wide aerospace composite stringer that runs from tip to tail of the board. Helium being a new idea that Firewire created, is much different than a traditional surfboard. Instead of having one single stringer that goes down the middle, it has Parabolic Balsa and Paulownia Wood Rails that gives it its torsional rigidity. With its 0.8 lb EPS core, Entropy Bio-Resin, and Helium infused rails, Firewire has successfully created one of the lightest boards out there. Timbertek combines the wood rails with a 3mm Paulownia wood top and bottom deckskin. This combo gives TimberTek boards amazing functionality, without sacrificing the stylish classic look. Every time I go out to surf with a TimberTek no matter where I am, I always get compliments on how good the board looks.
Firewire boards are created from all environmentally sustainable materials. They collaborated with BLOOM Foam to create a sustainable material. It is made out of algae biomass. By removing this algae it allows more plants and animals to habitat the area.
Currently, Firewire has some of the most experienced shapers and surfers alike designing and producing their boards. Guys like Daniel “Tomo” Thomson, Dan Mann, Kelly Slater, and Rob Machado all have created quivers using Firewire board technology. It’s no wonder why top pros from around the world are riding for Firewire.
